Some of the essays seem a little naive and make some questionable (though not necessarily incorrect) claims and others don't really seem to belong in the book (such as the essay on Babism), but overall the book was a good read|About the Author|Linda S. Walbridge is at Indiana University-Purdue University.

This collection of essays explores the nature of political and religious leadership in Shi'ism. Contributors look at a variety of critical historical periods--from medieval to modern--to reveal the social, political, and theological factors that have influenced the development of Shi'ite leadership.
